Have you ever wanted to photograph grizzly bears in their natural habitat, pods of orcas swimming in a procession of synchronized gracefulness, clusters of Stellar Sea Lions basking on rocks, bald eagles too many to count, crashing waves on windswept beaches, waterfalls hidden deep in the forest, landscapes of unprecedented beauty, tree covered islands that speak to a time past? These are just some of the experiences you will encounter when you join world-famous wildlife and travel photographer, Rolf Hicker, on a uniquely customized photo tour and photography workshop on British Columbia’s west coast.
Let us know your interests and expectations and we will tailor a program specific to your needs. Do you, for example, want to learn more about landscapes and panorama photography or wildlife photography, possibly with an eye to capturing an animal in motion? Perhaps your interests lay in the art of photo editing or maybe you would like a program involving a bit of each. Whatever your choice, we will be happy to accommodate you. For our computer digital darkroom sessions we will be using Lightroom 3 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.
We suggest a minimum of a 3-day photo workshop stay. The weather can be unpredictable and the boat tours, in particular, depend on the weather. Please note that we cannot guarantee wildlife, however, we normally do see a good mix of animals and marine mammals.
Suggested Photo Tours / Photography Workshops
Photo tour: Scenery of the West Coast
An 8 to 10 hour trip to Vancouver Island’s west coast. Be prepared for 2 to 3 hours of easy hiking. We will take you to a temperate rainforest where you will see waterfalls and moss-covered trees with an understory of lush vegetation. Then we head off to a sandy beach and the wild west coast where we can photograph unique rock formations, sea stacks and crashing waves. The beach is a great place to play with light, particularly when the sun begins to dip below the horizon.
Photo tour: Marine Life of the West Coast
A 6 to 8 hour trip to Vancouver Island’s west coast. We will charter a boat to photograph some of the many varieties of marine life that populate the coast including humpback whales, eagles and sea otters. There are over 50 species of marine animals that inhabit the coast.
Photo tour: Knight Inlet Grizzly Bears
This is a 7 to 8 hour trip. We will charter a boat to take us to a grizzly bear sanctuary in Knight Inlet to see one of the greatest concentrations of grizzly bears along the coast. Once there we will travel up an estuary where we will be able to photograph the bears from the safety of the boat. We will spend 2 to 3 hours with the bears and on our return we may encounter whales, dolphins, seals and eagles.
Photo tour: Broughton Archipelago by boat
Photo tour: Northern Vancouver Island Classic
A 6 to 8 hour trip. Expect some easy hiking. Our majestic landscape and exceptional surroundings is just one of the reasons that Condé Nast Traveler has voted Vancouver Island as the top island destination in North America for eight consecutive years. In this tour we will explore the beauty of the north island and take you to some of the hidden gems and little known locations off the beaten path.
